Artist: Gilles Perrin

Gilles Perrin was born in Paris in 1947 and has a master in photography. Since 1972 he has worked as an author-photographer and has traveled around the world to photograph his contemporaries. He is also engaged in advertising photography and until recently he taught photography at Paris VIII University for over 20 years.

Gilles’ use of the large format camera creates valuable interaction with the people he is photographing. Following initial dialogue, the time it takes to set-up the camera creates an important ritual which enables openness between himself and his subjects.

Gilles’ subjects are not anonymous; each person he photographs has a name and is from a very specific location. Gilles titles each picture to reflect this.

As a responsible human being, he believes his work is to take photographs and to witness. Gilles leaves it to his audience to look at the photographs and then to question themselves.

ولد جيل بيران في باريس في سنة 1947 ولديه شهادة الماجستير في التصوير الضوئي. منذ عام 1972 اشتغل ككاتب ومصور وسافر إلى كل أنحاء العالم ليصور معاصريه. وهو يشتغل أيضاً بتصوير الإعلانات وحتى وقت قريب كان درّس مادة التصوير الضوئي في جامعة باريس الثامنة Paris VIII لمدة تزيد على 20 سنة. واستخدام جيل لآلة التصوير التي تنتج صوراً بالمقاسات الكبيرة يخلق حوار ثميناً مع الأشخاص الذين يصورهم. فبعد قيامه بحوار مع هؤلاء الناس، يتيح الوقت اللازم لتحضير الكاميرا طقساً هاماً يفسح المجال للصراحة بينه وبينهم.

ومواضيع جيل ليسوا أناساً مجهولي الهوية. فكُلّ شخص يصوره لَه اسم ويأتي من مكان محدد جداً. ويعطي جيل كل صورة عنواناً معيناً لإظهار ذلك.

وهو كإنسان مسؤول يعتقد أن عمله بالأساس هو التقاط الصور الضوئية والشهادة على عصره. ويترك جيل الأمر للجمهور للنظر إلى صوره واستجواب أنفسهم إثر ذلك.

Tiziana With Daisies

ولد هاري ثويليار الابن في عام 1964. وتخرج من أكاديمية الفنون في ممفيس ومسشوستس في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية ومن جامعة فلوريدا. والحدث الذي كان له أكبر أثر على حياته العملية كان اعتداءاً تعرض له في سنة 1990 دمر عينه التصويرية ولم يترك له سوى 20 % من بصره. وأدى به بصره الضعيف إلى إتقان عملية البلاتين التي تتطلب استخدام آلات تصوير كبيرة المقاس. ونشرت صوره عالمياً فيHarpers & Collins و Penguin Books و New Scientist و Guinness Ireland. ومن بين الجوائز التي حاز عليها Bronze Echo Award. وقد فاز الفيلم الوثائقي عن حياته وأعماله بعنوان Darkroom على جائزة أفضل فيلم توثيقي في مهرجان بوسطن للأفلام الأيرلندية عام 2000. وقد عرض ثويليار صوره بانتشار واسع في أيرلندا واليابان ونيويورك. وتستكشف أعماله الأخاذة وسيلة التحميض بالبلاتين والبلاديوم المعقدة والتي تتطلب مهارة فائقة. وتستثير صوره التي يرتب طبقاتها بصورةٍ بديعة رؤيةً فنية كئيبة وحالمة، رغم أنها لا تستقي مواضيعها إلا من الحياة اليومية حصراً. وقد توفي ثويليار في إيطاليا عام 1997 في حادث مفجع

Almost virgins, Cairene portraits

Artist: Hermann Huber

Hermann Paul Huber was born in Vienna in 1966. After having finished his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the School of Artistic Photography Friedl Kubelka, his work has been widely shown in solo and group exhibitions, most recently in Istanbul at the House of Photography. Currently, he lives and works in Vienna and Cairo.The process of image making is most fascinating for him. Usually he does not direct his models; he just tries to capture a very specific moment. He likes the idea of viewers entering his photography without trying to fit exactly his own vision. His portraits are quite intense, they are in one way intimate pictures – they tell a lot. The aim of this project is to raise the question about emotions, feelings, desire and identity of young women in a Muslim country.

ولد هرمان بول هوبر في فيينا سنة 1966. وبعد أن أنهى دراسته في معهد الفنون الجميلة في فيينا ومدرسة التصوير الضوئي الفني “فريدل كوبلكا”. جرى عرض أعماله بانتشار واسع في معارض فردية وجماعية وكان أحدث معرض له في إستانبول في دار التصوير الضوئي “House of Photography”. وهو يقيم حالياً في فيينا والقاهرة ويعمل بهما. ويفتتن هوبر أيما افتتان بعملية تكوين اللوحة الفنية. وهو عادةً لا يوجّه الأشخاص في صوره ما عليهم القيام به، بل يحاول أن يلتقط لحظة ما لها خصوصية واضحة. إذ تستهويه فكرة أن يدخل المشاهد صوره من دون أن يفرض وجهة نظره الخاصة على هذا المشاهد. ولوحاته تحمل جملةً قوية من المشاعر، لأنها حميمة على نحو ما – إذ تحكي الكثير الكثير. وهدف هذا المشروع هو طرح أسئلة عن العواطف والمشاعر والرغبات والهوية لدى الشابات في البلاد الإسلامية.

Inhalexhale(شهيق-زفير) صالة عرض فنية لا تتوخى الربح موجودة على الإنترنت وتهتم بالفنون المعاصرة والأزياء والصوتيات. وتجمع هذه الصالة أعمال فنانين ومصممين من كل أنحاء العالم وتقدمها على الملأ. وتتضمن نشاطاتها معارض ذات مواضيع معينة ومشاريع فردية على موقعها على الإنترنت (www.inhalexhale.org) إضافةً إلى أماكن عرض حقيقية. وتسعى الصالة إلى أن تحافظ على حيوية أمستردام العالمية عن طريق التعاون مع فنانين دوليين وغير غربيين في أغلب الوقت. وتجتهد Inhalexhale لاستكشاف أطر جديدة غير تقليدية ترتبط بتقديم الفنون المعاصرة وإدراكها. وهي تجعل العلاقة بين الأعمال والفنان أكثر وضوحاً للمشاهدين إذ تتناول مواضيع يعتبرها الفنانون أنفسهم مواضيع شخصية. وتأسست Inhalexhale في عام 2004 وتديرها إيرينا بيرغر وكاتيا سوكولوفا وهما فنانتان تقيمان في مدينة أمستردام الهولندية.

Artist: Jane Fulton Alt

Jane Fulton Alt was born in Chicago in 1951. She attended the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago (MA, 1975). She has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. She is the recipient of numerous awards. Alt’s photographs explore universal issues of humanity, reflecting an interest in the mysteries of life and the non-material world.

Her project on Katrina grew out of having witnessed the aftermath of a devastating natural disaster. As a clinical social worker, she provided care to the survivors of Katrina, a deadly hurricane that passed thru the south in August of 2005. She accompanied the residents to their homes for the first time since they fled. She has been in mourning ever since. The stories she heard had one thing in common: they were all heartbreaking. These images are her attempt to describe what she saw. She hopes these images will ensure that the survivors will not be forgotten.

ولدت جاين فولتن آلت في شيكاغو عام 1951، وقد تابعت دراساتها في جامعتي ميشيغان وشيكاغو التي حصلت منها على الماجستير عام 1975. وقد عرضت أعمالها على نحو واسع وطنياً ودولياً، وتلقت عدة جوائز. ويستكشف تصوير آلت قضايا البشرية الكونية، مظهراً اهتمامها بأسرار الحياة والعالم غير المادي.

وقد بدأت العمل بمشروعها حول إعصار كاترينا بعدما شهدت الآثار التي خلفتها كارثة طبيعية مدمرة. وهي كانت تعمل مساعدةً اجتماعية تعتني بالناجين من الإعصار “كاترينا” المميت الذي اجتاح الجنوب الأميركي في شهر آب عام 2005. وقد رافقت السكان إلى بيوتهم للمرة الأولى بعد أن تركوها هاربين. والتزمت الحداد منذ ذلك العهد. فكل الحكايات التي سمعتها كانت تشترك بميزة واحدة: كانت كلها تفطر القلوب. وهذه الصور محاولة منها لتصف ما رأته. وتتمنى أن تبقى حائلاً دون نسيان الناجين من هذه الكارثة.

Yazd / Iran, 2002

Artist: Jean-Francois Pirson

Architect, with a background in dance, Doctor des belles artes (Barcelona), Jean-François Pirson expresses his relationship to space through different practices (drawing, photography, installations, writing, walking in urban and mountainous environments). Professor at the Institute of Architecture Lambert Lombard (Liege, Belgium), he took leave, in 2005, to pursue his own project itinerary.

In the last few years, Jean-François Pirson combines his travels and his walks with his exploratory practices of space and uses photography as a medium to put in perspective parts of the world. He currently prepares the edition of the book and the photographic installation Dessine-moi un voyage (Draw me a travel), Edition and gallery, La lettre volée, Brussels, autumn 2006.

جان فرنسوا بيرسون مهندس معماري تابع دراسة بالرقص قبل أن يحصّل شهادة الدكتوراه بالفنون الجميلة من برشلونة. ويعبر عن علاقته مع الفراغ عبر ممارسات مختلفة (الرسم والتصوير ضوئي والنصب الفنية والكتابة والتجول في البيئات المدنية والجبلية). وهو بروفسور في معهد الهندسة المعمارية لامبير لومبار في مدينة لييج البلجيكية. وقد أخذ إجازة من التدريس عام 2005 لكي يتفرغ لمسيرة مشروعه الخاص.

ويعمل جان فرنسوا بيرسون في السنوات الأخيرة على الجمع بين أسفاره وتجواله الطويل بحثاً وتطبيقاً لاستكشافه للفراغ المحيط ويستخدم التصوير من أجل جمع مختلف وجهات نظر عن العالم. حالياً يقوم بالتحضير لكتاب تصوير ونصب فنّي بعنوان “draw me a travel” (ارسم لي رحلة)، لدى دار النشر وصالة العرض”la lettre volée” في بروكسل، خريف 2006.

Johannes Hepp was born in Freiburg, Germany, in 1969. Currently, he lives and works in Munich and Buenos Aires. “His ‘The Days After’ presents a striking series of superficially benign but deeply disturbing images through an ambitious, systematic study of the sites of terrorist activity around the world. Made sometimes days and sometimes years after… Hepp’s edgy and impossible constructed panoramas conflate the specific moments of terrorist attack and the subsequent passage of time, thereby

creating a powerful visual equivalent to the way of horrific events leave marks on memory long after they have occurred… The images are montaged to depict multiple moments in time and challenge the conventions of the documentary. Hepp draws us, his viewers, into his frame, making us witnesses, not only to the aftermath of violence that marks place and psyches, but to his own act of witness.

ولد يوهانيس هيب في مدينة فرايبورج الألمانية سنة 1969. وهو حالياً يقيم في ميونخ وبوينس آيرس ويعمل بهما. مشروعه “The Days After” يقدم سلسلة ضاربة من الصور التي تبدو حميدة سطحياً، لكنها مقلقة جداً إذ يطرحها من خلال دراسة طموحة ومنظّمة لمواقعِ النشاطِ الإرهابي حول العالم. وهي ملتقطة أحياناً بعد أيام وأحياناً أخرى بعد مرور عدة سنوات من وقوع الهجمة الإرهابية، ويسعى هيب بها لتقديم منظرٍ شامل مؤلّف بصورة منفعلة ومستحيلة تسترعي اللحظات المحددة للهجمة الإرهابية والمرور اللاحق للوقت، ويخلق بذلك صورةً قوية تعادل الطريقة التي تترك بها هذه الأحداث الشنيعة أثارها في الذاكرة حتى بعد وقت طويل من حدوثها. وهذه الصور مركبة لتصف لحظات متعددة في زمن واحد وبطريقة تتحدّى أعراف العمل التوثيقي. ويشدنا هيب، نحن مشاهديه، إلى إطاره، ويَجْعلُنا شهوداً، لَيسَ فقط على ما يخلفه العنف من أثر بليغ على المكان والنفوس، بل على دوره هو نفسه شاهداً على الحدث…

Olomana Intermediate School

Artist: Juliane Eirich

Juliane Eirich was born in Munich, Germany, in 1979. After two internships in Miami and Munich she studied at the Academy of Photographic design in Munich. After graduating she went to New York City and Honolulu to work and pursue her own projects.

In her point of view, being a photographer makes one curious by profession. This curiosity is what inspires her and makes her enthusiastic about photography.

The main subject of her work is physical places. Most of her work is photographed during night time. She is showing the peculiarity and beauty of places that usually would not get much attention. Her work deals with the relationships between people and places, and the rendering of real and artificial-like environments in everyday life. Day and night, loud and silent, dense and empty, she intends to capture these contrasts in her work.

Her goal is to take pictures that are story telling to pass on her curiosity to the viewers.

ولدت يوليان أيريخ في ميونخ، ألمانيا، في سنة 1979. وبعد دورتين تدريبيين في ميامي وميونخ درست في أكاديمية التصميم بالتصوير الضوئي Academy of Photographic Design في ميونخ. وبعد أن تخرجت، ذهبت إلى مدينتي نيويورك وهونولولو لكي تشتغل وتسعى وراء مشاريعها الشخصية.

في وجهة نظرها، أن المصور يصبح فضولياً بحكم مهنته. وهذا الفضول هو ما يلهمها ويجعلها متحمسة للتصوير الضوئي. والموضوع الرئيسي لعملها هو الأماكن الطبيعية. وتلتقط أغلب صورها أثناء الليل. فهي تظهر خصوصية الأماكن التي عادة لا تسترعي الكثير من الانتباه والجمال الذي تتمتع به. ويتناول عملها العلاقات بين الناس والأماكن وإخراج البيئة الحقيقية والمصطنعة في الحياة اليومية. فهي تتعمد إن كانت البيئة نهاراً أم ليلاً، صاخبةً أم صامتة، مزدحمةً أم فارغة، أن تلتقط هذه المتناقضات في عملها. وهدفها هو التقاط صور تروي قصصاً لنقل فضولها إلى المشاهدين.

Les Femmes du Maroc

Artist: Lalla Essaydi

أجرت لالا السيّدي دراساتها في التصوير الضوئي والزيتي والرسم. ويتناول فنها، الذي يقرن بين فن الخط العربي وتصويرات جسد المرأة، الواقع المعقد لهوية المرأة العربية من وجهة النظر الفريدة للتجربة الشخصية. وهي تعود في أعمال كثيرة لها إلى طفولتها في المغرب مسترجعةً ذلك الزمن بعد أن أصبحت امرأة راشدة معلقة في مكان ما بين الماضي والحاضر، وفنانة تستكشف اللغة التي يجب أن “تتكلمها” من هذا المكان المعلق. وغالبا ما تستحوذ رسومها الصورة الاستشراقية لتقاليد الرسم الغربية وتدعو بهذه الطريقة المشاهدين ليعيدوا النظر في الأساطير الاستشراقية. وقد عملت لالا السيّدي في أساليب فنية مختلفة، ومن بينها الرسم والفيديو والنصب الفنية الفلمية والتصوير الضوئي غير الرقمي. “في فني، أريد أن أقدم نفسي من خلال عدسات مختلفة – فنانة، مغربية، سعودية، تقليدية، ليبرالية، مسلمة. وبعبارة مختصرة، أدعو المشاهد ليقاوم الصورة النمطية التي نطلقها على الأمور.

Opening Curtains

Artist: Lili Almog

Lili Almog is a New York based artist who has concentrated her artistic efforts on creating representations of the feminine body and psyche. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States, Europe, Australia and Israel, including the Norton Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Musee de la Photographie in Belgium, Museet for Fotokunst in Denmark, the Griffin Museum, and the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art. Perfect Intimacy, her most recent project, was published as a monograph in 2006 by powerHouse books and exhibited at the UK Ffotogallery and Photographers’ Gallery London, Andrea Meislin Gallery in New York and currently on tour in Europe.

Emergence

Artist: Lisa Robinson

Lisa Robinson lives in Jackson Heights, New York. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from Columbia University and received her MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design. She recently completed a month as the Artist-in-Residence at Light Work in Syracuse, New York. The color photographs comprising SNOWBOUND transform the very familiar world of front yards and back yards into sublime scenes that encourage deep reflection. These winter scenes, at once accessible and inviting, suggest, upon contemplation, the temporal nature of all things. In the heart of winter, there are subtle references to other seasons which have passed, but will come again, providing optimism about a cycle of life and our human place within this world. This series was recently exhibited at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, MA., and as part of the Festival de la Luz in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

تقيم ليسا روبنسون في مدينة جاكسون هايتس بولاية نيويورك. وقد حصلت على إجازة في الآداب الانجليزية من جامعة كولومبيا وعلى MFA (ماجستير الفنون الجميلة في التصوير الضوئي) من معهد سافانا للفن والتصميم Savannah College of Art & Design. وقد قضت مؤخراً شهر إقامة فنية في دار Light Work في مدينة سيراكوز بولاية نيويورك. والصور الملونة التي يحتويها العرض “SNOWBOUND” (محتجز بالثلج) تحول العالم المألوف جداً للحدائق الأمامية والخلفية إلى مشاهد رائعة تحث على التفكر العميق. فهذه المشاهد الشتوية، التي هي في الآن ذاته مفتوحة ومرحبة، توحي بعد التأمل بها بالطبيعة الفانية لدى كل الأشياء. وفي منتصف الشتاء، نجد إشارات دقيقة إلى مواسم أخرى فاتت، ولكنها ستجيء من جديد وهي تزودنا بالتفاؤل بدورة الحياة ومكاننا البشري في هذا العالم. وحديثا عرضت هذه السلسلة في متحف غريفين للتصوير الضوئي Griffin Museum of Photography في ونشستر بولاية ماساشوستس وكجزء من مهرجان النور Festival de la Luz في بوينوس آيرس بالأرجنتين.

Jerusalem for Marina – No Chance Tonight – Transnistria

Artist: Lorraine Gillet

Lou G. (Lorraine Gillet) became an independent “video and photography maker” in the early 2000. Living her life as a “European woman”, “image and

history lover”, especially when images become signs or symbols of

history.

Her short video-documentaries are somewhere between art and journalism,

dealing with Freedom and Migration (No Chance Tonight) ; or the

“surreal side” of International Politics (Dievouchka!, Traveling

Diary in Transnistria). Another short film about religions (Jerusalem

for Marina), was made for children; dedicated to a young girl, it’s a

sensitive musical wander through the Old City of Jerusalem and its

three religious quarters, Muslim, Christian and Jewish.

Her work was shown in festivals Moldova (Marathon Chisinau), Serbia

(Alternative Festival Belgrade), Ukrainia (Contackt), France (Art

Action International Paris and Berlin, Les Inattendus Lyon ). Now

working on a short film about spiritual faith and mythology, very

symbolic and “coded”. She Left Western Europe in mid-2004, and is

still on traveling (Eastern Europe, Middle-East).

تعمل لو ج. (لورين جييه) منذ بداية العام 2000 “مخرجة فيديو وتصوير ضوئي” مستقلة. وهي تعيش حياتها “كامرأة أوروبية” و”هاوية للصور والتاريخ”، بالخصوص لما تكون الصور إشارات أو رموزاً للتاريخ. فأفلامها الوثائقية القصيرة تمزج الفن والصحافة، لأنها تتناول مواضيع كالحرية والهجرة (No Chance Tonight) أو الوجه “السريالي” للسياسة الدولية (Dievouchka!, Traveling Diary in Transnistra). وقد أنتجت فلماً قصيراً موجهاً للأطفال وموضوعه الأديان (Jerusalem for Marina)، وهو مهدي إلى بنت صغيرة ويعرض نزهة موسيقية في أرجاء مدينة القدس القديمة وأحيائها الثلاثة المسلم والمسيحي واليهودي ولكل طابعه الديني. وعرضت أعمالها في مهرجانات في مولدوفا: Marathon Chisinau، وصربيا: Alternative Festival Belgrade، وأوكرانيا: Contackt، وفرنسا: Art Action International في مدينتي باريس وبرلين و Les Inattendus في مدينة ليون. وحالياً تعمل على فلم صغير عن الإيمان الروحاني والميثولوجيا وهذا الفيلم رمزي جداً ومليءٌ بالإشارات. وقد تركت أوروبا الغربية في منتصف سنة 2004 وما زالت تسافر في أوروبا الشرقية والشرق الأوسط.
